Socio Economic Development

Previously, all Social Corporate Investments were co-ordinated by Bidvest, however with the decentralization of activities Corporate Social Investment has become the responsibility of Prestige.

Prestige is involved in the following Corporate Social Investments:

On Thursday, 18 November, the Finance Department of the Bidvest Prestige Group visited the Children’s Oncology Ward at Baragwanath Hospital.

As part of a Team Building exercise, the Finance Department arrived at Wards 43 and 44 armed with paint brushes, bright paints, and tools to clean up the play area for these children.

Unfortunately, the weather did not turn out as we had anticipated, however, we were grateful that the rain held off till all work was completed.

The Durban Children’s Homes is a non-profit organization, which was founded in 1905. The core business of the organization is to provide needy children, young people and their families with a range of services, which recognizes their existing strengths and provides opportunities for them to meet their developmental needs. The organization, based in the suburb of Glenwood, within the city of Durban, has over the past 10 years worked tirelessly to transform its programmes. This has ensured that these programmes are relevant and in line with the Child and Youth Care Policy of our country.

On the 1st December 2010, World Aids Day, we visited an orphanage called Love in Action. This orphanage is situated in Mabopane, Pretoria.

Prestige Hospitality and Healthcare Divisions collected imperishable foods, clothes, sweets, chips, toiletries etc from our Regions. This was a project that was run by the Training Department.

On arrival there were a few children as the rest of them were still at school writing exams. We started to unload all the goods and then we prepared lunch for all the children.

The awareness and responsibility to make a difference in an HIV positive child’s live is awesome.

As a gesture of our commitment to the community, Bidvest Prestige Group Training Consultants from the Central Division gave out cloths, food, toiletries, and cleaning consumables to the Phomolong HIV chil-dren’s home.

Phomolong HIV children’s home is a home to 23 children ranging from the ages of 2 months - 13yrs; most have been abandoned or disowned. These children are placed on an HIV program and monitored daily.

To commemorate World AIDS Day, the Prestige, Cape Coastal Division decided to spend the morning with an extraordinary group of children at the SOS children’s orphanage, Thornton, Cape Town.

More than 30 employees of Prestige decided to work together as a team to offer our cleaning services to an organisation that provides a home to 110 orphans. There are kids that have been affected by or infected with Aids. Chatting to the house mothers looking after the orphans, being told the life history of each orphan sent by the court was emotionally overwhelming.

The company currently sponsors cleaning of an HIV clinic in Thembisa. They go in once a week and clean up the place and perform on-going training to their cleaners. They also sponsor food to the clinic. They donated an urn, cups and utensils and buy coffee, tea, milk, bread and jam on a weekly basis to ensure the patients standing in queues have some nourishment.

Once training of the cleaners has been completed, Prestige will search for another aids clinic to offer similar services.

Shave-a-thon is a charity event in support of Cancer sufferers. This year, Shave-a-thon has been working alongside sporting events like the Comrades, the Argus etc. Prestige supplies the cleaners and gets involved in the hype of it all. This event is special in that the cleaners get the opportunity to give something back as they get to participate in shaving or colouring their hair as well.

This project is significant because of its reality to everybody and because it affects HIV positive patients as well.
